If you’ve been chosen to be part of the bridal party, rejoice! You’re in the inner circle for once. It doesn’t matter if what you’re doing is important or not. I’m sure you can just enjoy the fact that you were thought of, appreciated, and wanted to be involved in such an amazing, stressful, and beautiful event.

1. Being in the bridal party is gonna cost money
Bridesmaids are normally taken to task about a year before the actual wedding date. That means that you’ll still have some time to prepare yourself and to budget for the wedding. You’ll have to pay for your dress (if the bride isn’t going to) and you’ll also have to chip in when it comes to the bachelorette party, among other expenses. No, it doesn’t mean you must spend an insane amount of money, but just being prepared can make things easier for you and for the bride.
2. It is a great time to make new friends
If you don’t really know who the other ladies the bride has chosen as bridesmaids are, this is a good opportunity for you to make new acquaintances. Become everybody’s best friend and it will definitely make sure the bride’s prep-process goes without a hitch. After all, the bride needs her best friends with her through it all, so it won’t hurt if everyone could get along with each other. It would also be great to get to know the groom at this point, if you don’t already know him.
3. Accept the dress and the color scheme
Remember, the wedding is not about you. It is about the bride; and if you are made to wear a dress that you wouldn’t typically wear, ever, and the color scheme is not to your liking, keep it to yourself. You wouldn’t want to upset the bride by commenting unnecessarily on the whole outlook. The only time you should voice out your opinion is if the bride has asked for your advice. You don’t want to be THAT uncooperative bridesmaid.
4. Figure out your roles and call dibs early
Having constant discussions with the bride and the other bridesmaids about the roles each of you has to play will make tasks easier to complete. Determine in the early stages what tasks are to be done and who is to be in charge, and if possible, call dibs on what you think you can do best, and what suits your budget well.
5. Don’t be afraid to clarify and to ask for help
When in doubt, keep in constant communication with the bride especially about the tasks that you don’t know how to do. Also, asking your fellow bridesmaids for help and advice is a great way to build your friendships and it will ensure that the tasks are done right. Remember, no bridesmaid works alone.
6. Stay out of any kind of drama
If you overheard something or saw something that you shouldn’t have seen, stay out of it. You wouldn’t want to get involved in drama that has nothing to do with you, whether it involves the other bridesmaids, or even the bride. Your job is just to be there for the bride to assist her in things related to the wedding. Keep away from unnecessary drama and stress.
7. Don’t vent to the bride
Being part of the bridal party can be stressful. As much as you think you are keeping the bride happy, the bride is also doing her best to keep all her bridesmaids happy. It wouldn’t be wise for you to vent out your dissatisfaction or unhappiness to the bride. If you need a shoulder to cry, its best to find someone else to vent to—preferably someone who doesn’t know the bride.
8. Being the MoH will be tough
If you’ve been asked to be the Maid of Honor, then your tasks and responsibilities will likely be more than all the other bridesmaids. You are given the task to be at the bride’s beck and call. Your job is to ensure that the bride has everything she needs. However, remember that you are not alone. You can ask for assistance from all the other bridesmaids and delegate tasks accordingly.
9. Be as attentive to the bride as you can
Some brides are very precise in what they want, and that can make your job easier. Other brides, however, may not be so precise and it will take some listening and figuring out on your part. Be attentive to the needs of the bride and make sure the bride gets all the help and support she needs.
10. Prepare for the worst
All bridesmaids should be on call if something disastrous happens like a hairstyling mistake or a wardrobe malfunction. There should be an emergency kit that contains stuff like bobby and safety pins, band-aids, and even deodorant. If all else fails, continue being supportive to the bride. You’re her friend first and foremost. All your other duties come after that. Make sure the bride knows that you’re always there for her no matter what.
