Yi-Ann + Howard | 1920s Old Shanghai Glam Wedding

It’s every little girl’s dream to have a perfect wedding, and there’s a lot that goes into creating a dream wedding – the dress, make-up, the cake, venue, accessories, food, bridesmaids, theme……. It’s no exceptional for Yi-Ann, and Howard’s Old Shanghai themed chinese wedding dinner held at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur on 17 October 2015.

Both Yi-Ann and Howard wanted to reflect their colourful Chinese heritage in Kuala Lumpur since both of them had been living in Melbourne for more than 10 years. Immediately they wanted a vintage, old glam 1920’s Shanghai theme for their wedding reception. During the actual day, Yi-Ann wore a traditional Qipao, and Howard wore a custom made suit. As for the wedding dinner, she wore a beautiful red laced gown by Suzanne Harward, whereby Howard wore his custom made tuxedo.

Their wedding dinner reception was beautifully planned by their Kuala Lumpur based wedding planner, My Wedding Planner with bold, colourful decor – vintage items, old photo frames, peonies flowers, and oriental lanterns. There were activities around to keep their guest busy like traditional Chinese hand-made sweets and Chinese paintings.

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day?

When we started planning, we wanted our wedding to reflect our colourful heritage. Our theme is to travel back to 1920’s Shanghai as Yi-Ann believed that weddings are meant to be fun and vibrant! Our wedding is a traditional Chinese reception but not the conventional type, that’s where we incorporated texture, volume, colours, and fun to our decor.

Both of us were very hand-on for our wedding process, planning and executing the tasks together with our vendors while we’re still in Melbourne. I’ve worked closely with Patricia on the decor as Howard handled the designing, printing of the invitation cards up to the traditional candy stall display! This is to ensure that our theme and concept details reflect our personalities.

What are some adjectives that best describe the look of your wedding?

1920’s, vibrant, old Shanghai glam

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

The most memorable moment was seeing all our hard work in planning and executing the details comes together on our big day! However, the best was being able to share and celebrate our joyous moments with our loved ones!

What advice do you have for other brides/grooms?

It takes a lot of effort and time to planned for your big day. Take time and enjoy every moment of your wedding day – every detail and soak it all up!
