A Scenic Engagement At Saddlerock Ranch, Malibu, California
For those of us with an unabashed love of fresh greenery and farm animals, this engagement is basically as good as it gets. Picture lush, rustic details set against Malibu’s sunny beauty, all captured with lots of love by the seriously talented Christine Choi. Here’s Ann talking to us about her love story and her engagement shoot.
“Wells and I met 11 years ago in a Japanese class at college. I still remembered vividly the first time we spoke; he asked me where he could buy a text book and I told him that I bought it at the local book store. I thought it funny that he had asked such a question, since the answer was so obvious! At Japanese class, we were always grouped together in the same team during discussions, so we had the opportunity to get to know each other better.”
“Being together for almost 11 years isn’t easy, as we went through plenty of ups and downs, which made us value each other more; the most important thing is that we’ll always have each other. The proposal happened during our 10th year anniversary celebration in Hawaii. We went to Waikiki Beach’s revolving restaurant for dinner. During the course of the evening, we talked about what we saw during the trip and what we wanted to do for the rest of our remaining days on the island. After dinner, Wells asked for the bill and then he brought me close to the window. I thought he just wanted to show me the nightview of Waikiki. Suddenly, he got down on one knee and proposed – I said ‘yes’. I had no idea that he was going to propose to me on this trip!”
“I wanted the engagement shoot to relate to our story and our wedding theme. We divided the shoot into three scenes. Firstly, The ‘Movie Picnic’. For this, I prepared pillows, blankets, cupcakes and decorations to create the atmosphere of a picnic. We’re huge fans of movies, and Wells is a DVD / Blu-ray collector (we’ve more than three bookshelves of DVDs / Blu-rays at home). We picked out movies that we liked the most to feature in the shoot. We named our second scene ‘A Little Punch Of Yellow’; it fitted our personalities and represented our future! We’re both cheerful people and hope that our future is filled with bright sunlight leading us through. No matter how difficult things may seem, we’ll always find a solution. The third scene, ‘Love Romantic’, was a prove of our love, even after 10 years. We’re now ready to take our next step together as husband and wife.”
“I had always wanted to take my engagement shots at beautiful Malibu in California. After tonnes of research, I found Saddlerock Ranch. It has a little of everything and with a lot of gorgeous trees as backdrop. Wells and I aren’t really photogenic. Christine, our photographer, helped us out a lot! She told us to relax and be ourselves. We had a lot of fun during our shoot, especially during a particular scene where we fed the zebra. I was terrified. On the whole, the shoot was fantastic.”
“We were lucky we found the location just 1.5 hours away from my home. Tips for other brides: always do background research on where you plan to shoot – select a location that’s meaningful to the both of you. The most important thing is, don’t stress; just relax and have fun!”
